Paris 5ᵉ
The Latin Quarter, seen from here
This is not a postcard neighbourhood: people do their shopping here, drink their morning coffee here, pass the same faces. Here is what is worth knowing before you unpack.
The Panthéon and the Montagne Sainte-Geneviève
Rue Valette climbs straight towards the Panthéon. This is the high point of the quarter, where rue Soufflot, rue Clovis and rue Descartes begin. The Panthéon is open to visitors, its dome too from April to October, and the church of Saint-Étienne-du-Mont just behind is worth the detour for its rood screen, the only one left in Paris.
The Sorbonne and boulevard Saint-Michel
Place de la Sorbonne and its fountain, the bookshops along the boulevard, the arthouse cinemas of rue Champollion: this is the student heart, busy on weekdays, quieter in August. The Luxembourg Gardens open at sunrise, five minutes away on foot.
Rue Mouffetard and the Maubert market
To shop like a local: the Mouffetard in the morning from Tuesday to Sunday, and the Maubert market on place Maubert on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Cheesemongers, greengrocers, fishmongers, and bakeries that hold their own against any arrondissement.
The quays and the Île de la Cité
Ten minutes on foot separate rue Valette from the banks of the Seine. Shakespeare and Company, the bouquinistes, square René-Viviani and its locust tree planted in 1601, Notre-Dame across the water. This is the evening walk.
