Location
Le Calvin
Le Calvin takes its name from the tower still standing at the back of the courtyard at 21 rue Valette, the last surviving fragment of the college founded in 1394 by Pierre Fortet, a canon of Notre-Dame. At the end of 1533 it was by this tower and the neighbouring roofs that John Calvin, then a student, escaped arrest. In 1585 the Catholic League was founded in the same college. A Histoire de Paris plaque records it under the archway. The apartment shares the address with Le Fortet: a slightly more intimate format, the same location, fifty metres from the Panthéon and five minutes from the Sorbonne.
The apartment runs over two levels. Upstairs, the bedroom, under the original beams. Below, a large vaulted stone room, lit from beneath, holding the sitting area, the dining table and the kitchen. A rebuilt shower room sits under the vault.
In detail
The building
21 rue Valette, the former Collège de Fortet founded in 1394, listed by the City of Paris. At the back of the cobbled courtyard stands the so-called Calvin tower, the college's only surviving fragment, which gave the apartment its name. The last two photos in the gallery show the courtyard. Ground floor, no lift.
The living space
The vaulted room in exposed stone, lit from beneath: two sofas, a table seating six, a breakfast bar with stools, television and internet included. The bedroom is on the level above, under the beams.
The kitchen
Open onto the vaulted room, behind the bar: hob, microwave oven, fridge, kettle, Nespresso machine, crockery and utensils.
The shower room
Rebuilt under the vault in stone-effect tile: walk-in shower, basin, heated towel rail, separate toilet.
